Vassilios Karakostas is Professor of Philosophy of Physics at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He received his PhD, working on the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics, from the University of Cambridge. After completing his doctoral studies, he was elected as a Research Fellow at Cambridge University. His main research interests lie in the foundations and philosophy of quantum mechanics, quantum logic, category theory, philosophy of space-time theories, and philosophy of science, with particular reference to the metaphysical basis of science, the realism/antirealism conflict in contemporary science, the constitutive concept of the post-Kantian a priori in the foundations of the physical sciences, theories of truth, and in the co-formation of contemporary scientific perspectivism in Philosophy and Physics. His publications, on all preceding fields, appear in distinguished journals such as Foundations of Physics, Philosophy of Science, Synthese, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics, International Journal of Theoretical Physics, European Journal for Philosophy of Science, Erkenntnis, Journal for General Philosophy of Science, etc. He has delivered numerous lectures in international conferences and scientific workshops worldwide. He has been principal editor of the Third European Philosophy of Science Association Proceedings, “Perspectives and Foundational Problems in Philosophy of Science” (Springer, 2013), co-organizer of the First Hellenic Conference in Philosophy of Science (2010), Director of the Division of Philosophy and Theory of Science and Technology of the HPS Department (2014-2016), and currently Director of the Postgraduate Program in “History and Philosophy of Science and Technology” at the University of Athens (2024-).

His book “Philosophy of Physics. Space and Time, Quantum Theory and Reality” (Gutenberg, 2024, pp. 509, in Greek) was proposed by the State Literary Awards Committee of the Ministry of Culture as a nominee for the 2025 State Essay Prize.
