Irini Skaliora is a neuroscientist with a long-standing interest in the development and plasticity of the central nervous system. She obtained a BSc in Biology (University of Patras) and a PhD in Neurobiology (University of California, Davis). She then worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, before moving back to Greece to set up her own lab at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens (2007). As of 2019 she is also Professor of Cognitive Science at the Department of Philosophy and History of Science at NKUA. Her research focuses on the development and plasticity of the brain, and the function of cortical networks in health and disease. A major goal of the Skaliora lab is to develop novel methods for assessing the functional state of the cerebral cortex ex vivo, which can be used to evaluate the intrinsic connectivity in normal and pathological conditions. The team’s expertise includes animal behaviour, neurophysiology and image analysis, and their work is funded from national/international agencies.
