Panagiotis Thanassas is Professor for the History of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied Law in Athens and Philosophy in Tübingen, where he received his Ph.D. (1996) with a dissertation on Parmenides. He has also taught at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2003-18) and at the Universities of Tübingen, Heidelberg, Cyprus and Munich (LMU, Vertretungsprofessur, 2015).
His research interests focus on Greek philosophy (Pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle), German Idealism (Hegel), Heidegger and Philosophical Hermeneutics. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and has also received fellowships from IKY, from the Evangelisches Studienwerk “Villigst”, from DAAD, from DFG, and from the Princeton University (Stanley J. Seeger Visiting Fellow, 2019). His work has been published in journals such as Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie, Review of Metaphysics, Journal of Philosophical Research, Zeitschrift für Philosophische Forschung, Rhizai, Allgemeine Zeitschrift für Philosophie, Gnomon, Rhizomata, Philosophische Rundschau.
He has participated in the coordination and implementation of various research programs, has organized international conferences and has functioned as referee for various journals. He is Vice President of the Sectoral Council for the “Social Sciences and Humanities” at the Greek National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation (ESETEK).
